Chapter 9

“Are there cameras in here?” Sophia asked as she and Tigo ascended in the elevator to his apartment, which occupied the top two floors of the building.

Chuckling, Tigo barely raised his head from Sophia’s cleavage. “We’re shit out of luck if there are. I’d say the film crew’s already gotten their money’s worth out of us.”

The elevator’s chrome doors glided open silently. Tigo pulled Sophia behind him and out into the apartment’s sunken living room.

“Whoa. Business must be good,” she commented, observing the relaxing masculine surroundings. The gray, black and burgundy color scheme was soothing in tone and aura. The living room was simply furnished, and oh-so-comfortable burgundy sofas sat on either side of a plush gray rug that covered over half the room’s hardwood flooring. Deep black armchairs occupied one end of the rug. The chairs faced a gorgeous black lacquer-framed fireplace. Stout burgundy-shaded lamps with wide gray bases doused the room in a golden glow. She turned at the sound of Tigo tossing his keys into a dish on the credenza behind the chairs.

“Yeah, we do all right for a group of troublemakers.”

“Tsk, tsk. So harsh. I don’t think Eli would appreciate that label.” She pulled off her jacket and holster. “Looks like he was the only sane voice among your group of rugged thugs.”

Tigo chuckled while nodding his agreement. “That may be true. Even I have to admit the guy’s advice is sound.”

She walked off to trail her fingers along the back of one of the sofas. “Have you partaken of any lately?” She froze when the full force of the view hit her. Philadelphia laid spread before her eyes beneath cloudy late-afternoon skies, which drew the eye to the lights from neighboring scrapers.

“He told me I’d be a fool to try and have you protected.”

When she looked at him, he shrugged and eased the undone tie from his collar. “You already know my attitude adjustment was a fake. If it was up to me, I’d have had a security detail on you the first day you left the academy.”

“Paula wanted to do just that when I told her about the threat.”

“Does that mean we’re still the only two who know about it?”

“I told Harold Mackey—he’s the department’s chief mechanic.” She flinched when Tigo’s vicious curse darkened the room.

“Do you even trust any of your brothers and sisters in blue?”

Her smile was sad. “Not many.”

The words broke Tigo’s heart. He watched her return to enjoy the view and allowed her less than a minute before he closed the space separating them. Then, he was jerking her into a kiss.

Sophia’s hunger for him, which never settled, fired up intensely, and she threw herself into the act. Eagerly, she curved an arm about his neck and sank her fingers into his dark hair. Her free hand tugged insistently at the shirt tucked just inside his trousers. Once she’d freed it, her fingers were quick to undo the buttons. Sophia only managed to loosen Tigo’s belt before he sank to the sofa and tugged her astride his lap.
